First American Edition, Second Issue; lacks "Sold Only by Subscription" on title page. Exceedingly rare Osgood printing of this science fiction masterpiece. Green cloth boards with gilt and black decoration to front, spine. Significant scuffing to boards, esp. spine; 2" vertical split at front upper joint; 1/2" split at rear joint; heavy fraying to spine edges. 2" vertical split continues at front hinge; rear hinge loose, w/ buckram connected but showing; hinge weak along front matter; pg. 65-66 completely separated. This true First American Edition, with "J.R. Osgood & Co." printed along base of spine, employs the British publisher's sheets (with "Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle" at base of TP). "The End" printed on pg. 303. Featuring one hundred and twelve detailed illustrations, including frontispiece of whale & squid and cover image of Captain Nemo w/ sextant. A scarce variant of this First Edition not often seen in the marketplace in any condition.
