"A lady of rare, scientific attainments," Emma Seiler was a pioneer of vocal sciences, emphasizing the anatomical and physiological principles required in the art and practice of singing (Translator's Preface). Seiler's work was originally published in 1861 in Germany, immediately becoming the standard pedagogical reference book for the art. Having had been endorsed by a number of prominent European scientists, Seiler immigrated to America in 1866 and founded a school for vocal studies and taught music lessons; a year later, Furness' English translation was first published (Vocal Pedagogy). Red boards, fully bound, with ink-stamped borders and decoration on front cover and spine, gilt title on spine, and blind-stampings on back cover. Top page edge dyed, heavily faded with some staining. Brown pastedowns. Infrequent instances of fingerprint staining.
