Overview

Given the history of Camp Chase Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, it is not surprising that stories would tell of it being haunted; however, the spirit said to haunt the cemetery is not that of a soldier, but a mysterious woman who often leaves flowers at two graves. "The Lady in Gray," as she has become known, is dressed in a dark gray Civil War-era traveling suit. When she is seen, her head is bowed, and a veil covers her face. People who have seen or heard her say that she seems to cry as she walks among the graves. The lady is often seen standing over two graves. One is the grave of an unknown soldier, and the other belongs to Benjamin F. Allen, a private who was a member of the 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Company D. The lady has been seen walking through the mature elm trees or out the main gate that is locked at night.
