This historical fiction novel was written by British war correspondent turned author George Alfred (G.A.) Henty. His books were primarily directed at young boys and tended to represent imperialism as necessary and justifiable. This title is set in the ninth century during the reign of the Anglo-Saxon king Alfred the Great. Originally published in 1885, research indicates that this edition was likely published between 1902 and 1910. It features red pictorial boards, black and white illustrations by C.J. Staniland, and eight pages of advertisements for other books by the same publisher. The book's exterior is faded and discolored in spots. The binding is slightly loose and both hinges are cracked. The first free endpaper has an inscription to a previous owner.
