Texas has an incredible abundance of snakes, and a few of the venomous ones are some of the most common in the state. With the abundance of prey and many warm days, everything a snake needs is here. There are around 115 species of snakes in Texas, and many of them are venomous. Most snakes are not dangerous to humans, but some, like the rattlesnake and copperhead, are among the most commonly found. Deaths from snake bites are rare, but pain, swelling, and other complications can result. Some of our snakes are small, worm like, and barely recognizable as snakes. Other snakes are very rare, secretive, or a subspecies only distinguishable from others by the trained eye. We will mention the extremely rare snakes along with their closest relatives in this book.
