Overview

Roger Alexander Deakins grew up in the coastal town of Torquay in Devon, where the contrasting textures of sea, countryside, and sky formed the earliest palette of his visual imagination. His father worked in construction, and his mother-an actress with a painter's sensibility-inspired him to appreciate artistic expression. At Torquay Boys' Grammar School, he developed a fondness for drawing, which led him to pursue graphic design at the Bath Academy of Art.

It was there, in the academy's creative environment, that still photography captured his full attention. Guest lecturer Roger Mayne exposed him to the power of candid, humanistic imagery, steering him toward the camera as both tool and language.
