In 1871 U.S. Navy and Marine Corps forces embarked on an ill-conceived diplomatic mission to open Corea (Korea), known as "The Hermit Kingdom". A series of misunderstandings resulted in a weekend battle marked by valor on both sides, and earning 15 American Seamen and Marines the first Medals of Honor for actions in a foreign war.
