Overview

This collection of satirical essays magnify societal issues in 19th-century New York, published in collaboration between Paulding and the Irving brothers. In particularly, this finely bound volume is part of the Hudson Edition set. Three-quarter polished brown calf with green marbled boards. Raised banding and gilt details on spine, gilt top edges, stiff marbled endpapers. Title page illustrations with leaf. Deckled edges. NPD, copyright of 1860, similar publishings are circa 1880, but this volume has a unique leaf pattern on the raised spine boxes and may be earlier. Previous owner bookplate "J. Untemyer," with portrait resemblance to Samuel J. Untemyer, a 19th-century New York lawyer who founded the Greystone public gardens. Rubbing to corners, calf edges, and spine. Gilt is bright and bindings are firm.
