Our mind in a very complex thing that is constantly working to take in and process information, from which it learns and uses as a reference for the next time you may need it. This can be very helpful and at times keep us safe.
Lots of these reference points are developed very early on in our lives or in response to isolated experiences, which means as time goes on and our lives change these reference points can become outdated yet still provide a template for us to live by.
