Overview
"Captain Jack, the Scout" an historical novel with copious notes, retelling "Braddock's Bloody Battle" of the French-Indian War as a "readable romance" (McKnight). Fort Duquesne was built by the French in 1754, forked between the Monongahela and Allegheny river, which converge into the Ohio River proper, making it a central focus to control the western territories of the New World. The author dedicates his work to the people of Pittsburgh, where the fort is located, and to the people, "white and red, who lived or fought along their three rivers." Deeply faded red boards, with gilt-stamped decorative title on front cover (blind-stamped on back) and faded gilt-stampings on spine, featuring an illustration of Fort Duquesne and an indigenous character of the narrative named Scaroo Yaddy. Excessive rubbing on edges, some loss on spine ends. Allegheny library notice on pastedown. Embossing on title page. "Beautifully Illustrated" throughout, with instances of foxing and toning.
