Great looking first printing set bound in half-leather calf binding with red, blue, tan, and white matching marbling on endpapers, boards, and page ends. Five raised spine bands with a red title label and gilt decorations and titles on the spines. The corners are a little worn and the spine ends slightly worn. The marbling on the heads and the front of the last volume is faded some. Illustrated by an engraved portrait opposite the title page of volume 1. The binding is by Harrison of 59 Pall Mall as stamped on the back of each front free endpaper. Originally projected as 6 volumes, Scott's son-in-law finished the last volume in 1738 for this first printing of one of the best of British biographies.
