This first edition biography of Confederate general Robert E. Lee was written by his former military secretary Armistead Lindsey (A.L.) Long in spite of his blindness. It has dark green cloth boards with gold lettering on the front cover and spine and features black and white illustrations, a fold-out map of of the battlefields of the Army of Northern Virginia, and facsimile reproductions of Lee's field maps. The front cover and the cloth binding covering the spine is almost completely detached and the rear hinge is cracked. The first few blank pages and title page are loose and the first free endpaper has the names of three previous owners. The interior pages are discolored due to age but this has not affected the readability of the text.
