Hunter green cloth boards with gilt titling to front, spine. Cover also features decorative stenciling in black. Gilt page ends. Wrapped in clear plastic dust jacket. G+. Scuffing to top and bottom of spine; rubbing to rear board; slight spine lean. Jacket has appx. 1/2" of loss at most corners. Prev. owner's inscription, dated January 9th, 1886, written on FFEP; Endpapers also contain taped white notecard; following page has 1" pencil notation in upper corner. This novel constitutes a clear example of Howells' realist fiction. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters," he was a prolific writer who also served as editor of The Atlantic Monthly.
