Overview

This index contains the names of over 45,800 children who entered the Children's Home of Cincinnati, Ohio between April 1864, and December 1919. Of those children who entered, only a small portion ( 11%) were surrendered and placed in foster homes or adopted. A great deal of family information was recorded when the children entered the home, which makes this a valuable source for family history researchers, as well as those researching social conditions in the late 19th Century.
For those children that were surrendered, subsequent documents record where the child was placed, and what happened to them in their new homes, sometimes for up to 20 years, until they reached adulthood. If the child was legally adopted and given a new name, these are indexed by both their birth name and adopted name to make it easier for the researcher to correlate.
