Familiar from its use as a method of teaching composition, its frequent appearances in sacred music, and as a form favored by many of classical music's greatest composers, the fugue bears a rich variety of associations. This unique collection represents a concise history of the form, with keyboard arrangements of great fugues from the seventeenth century onward, including a generous selection of pieces from its heyday during the Baroque period.
Beginning with works by Frescobaldi, Scarlatti, Giambattista, and Handel, this collection has as its centerpiece the glorious compositions of the fugue's most famous expositor, Johann Sebastian Bach. Selections of Bach's works include examples from the Goldberg Variations, Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, and the Art of the Fugue, and several pieces from both books of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Contributions from latter-day composers include popular works by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Robert and Clara Schumann, Brahms, and Saint-Sa ns.
