This is a compilation of fairy tales originally written for Ralph Waldo Emerson's daughter, Ellen. It first appeared in 1854 and was the first of her works to be published. This edition was part of the publisher's "Young People's Library" series, which ran from 1895-1933. It features green cloth pictorial boards with silver lettering on the front cover and spine. The stories are accompanied by 34 black and white illustrations and have four pages of endmatter consisting of advertisements for other books from the publisher. There is some fading and discoloration to the exterior and the bottom corners are slightly bumped. The first free endpaper has initials pencilled in the top corner, along with a gift inscription to a previous owner. The binding is beginning to come loose and is visible in a few spots towards the back of the book, although all pages appear to be intact.
