This massive work includes: extracts from statutes authorizing the congressional medal of honor, the distinguished-service cross, and the distinguished-service medal; explanatory notes; an alphabetical list of awards of the congressional medal of honor (awarded for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy); an alphabetical list of awards of the distinguished-service cross in national groups (awarded for extraordinary heroism in action under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918) to: Americans, British, and French; and, an alphabetical list of awards of the distinguished-service medal in national groups (awarded for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services, in a position of great responsibility, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918, except as otherwise indicated) to: Americans, Belgians, British, French, Italians, Japanese, citizens of other countries, and members of the Army, in lieu of the certificate of merit.
