When Prin's wife, dismayed by his indiscretion with an old flame, takes their four daughters to stay with family in the States, Prin finds himself living alone in the Toronto condominium newly built on the site of the college where he used to teach. Bitter about his solitude and filled with regret, struggling to find purpose in his faith and redeem himself to his family, he takes a dubious-sounding job in Terre-Haute, Indiana, and joins a group of earnest eccentrics working as consultants for Charlie Packer, the evangelical millionaire who dreams of building a Dante-themed amusement park that will revitalize the opioid-ravaged town.
