J.J. Johnson was one of the first trombone players to embrace the bebop idiom, and is still considered one of its leading players today. Alongside Kai Winding, Johnson formed the first double trombone combo, and celebrated a long and active recording career. As bandleader he produced some of his finest recordings with the Columbia label between the mid-1950s and the early 1960s.
