The native Southern Appalachian Brook Trout figure prominently in the lore and legend of the uplands of the South. In recent years it has been discovered that the fish also differ from their northern cousins. The brookies represent a bell weather species that tell us much about the condition of the habitat in which they live. It has been a story of decline that stretches back more than a century.
