Overview

This enthralling story opens on the frontier in 1832 as Big John McTavish and Gabriel Gilray, his metis protege, are out hunting.

For thirty years now, Big John McTavish has been living with the metis at Pembina. The metis are a mixed-blood breed, originally descended from Crees or members of other Indian tribes, who crossed with French-Canadian or British trappers.

While hunting, McTavish and young Gabriel Gilray save a mountain trapper named Pike who is being pursued by Chippewas. Unfortunately' in rescuing Pike Big John shoots Wolf Slayer' one of Tall Cloud's nephews. McTavish has long had friendly relations with the tribe, but that could now be at an end.

Because Pike's horse is also killed in the fracas, he has no choice but to join Big John and take part in a planned buffalo hunt for another horse. This suits Pike, whose real prey are the murderers of his partner -- two men known to live and hunt with the metis.
