A first edition copy of this haunted doll story, published in the same year as Chucky's "Child's Play." Although there are other instances of haunted doll tropes in the horror genre before Knight's "Baby Doll" -- such as "The Twilight Zone's" Living Doll episode and the clown doll in the 1982 film "Poltergeist" -- there was a huge explosion of the idea in the genre following 1988, with "Puppet Master" and "Annabelle" being among the most noteworthy. "For even though Ned knew there was no such things as ghosts, there was no denying the horrible feelings that came over him whenever he climbed the stairs to the attic. And the terrible certainty that he had stumbled across a long-buried secret. A secret never intended to see the light of day..."
