In the 1930s, the Library of Congress commissioned Alex Lomax to record Haitian traditional music, but regrettably, the poor quality of the records made the music difficult to enjoy. The Library of Congress initiated efforts in the 1990s to recover these LPs and video recordings, resulting in the creation of this book and a 10-CD set of recordings. The book includes the lyrics of these songs and photographs from the trip. Lomax was an ethnomusicologist who focused on folk music from different cultures and geographic areas, their origins, and, most importantly, preserving and publishing the music. CDs are not included.
