The patriarch of one of America's most prominent political families (a family that would produce two U.S. presidents), Charles Francis Adams Sr. himself served in the U.S. senate, was a vice presidential canidate in 1848, and during the time period of these texts here served as Minister to the United Kingdom as a crucial figure to keep Britain neutral in the Civil War. Here he writes to his son, Henry Adams, giving us a glimpse at the societal conditions and experiences in this tumultuous time. These two volumes are bound in green boards with multiple photographs of the grand figures reference in these works. There is light fading in the color on the spine of each volume and pages are lightly tanned. Endpages are priced with pencil from previous seller, Volume one has a 2 inch tear on the front endpage near the binding.
